At the time of the Civil War the "West" would have been a great place to hide out and escape the war. So I would suspect you would have found most of the conservatives in the rank and file lines of soldiers on both the north and south sides. You probably would have found liberals hiding out the war in the west. Kind of like going to Oxford for college or heading for Canada during the Veitnam war. That's probably how the migration of liberals to the west coast began. You'll still find them in Hollywood escaping service to our country and making fun of those who give their lives for our freedom.
