Figure out what you both like doing -- eg running, throwing frisbee in park, etc... and ask him to do it. Doesn't have to be at night, but is a great start -- may not feel as awkward.

Well find a common ground. example if he like to see football match etc. And say you love see it and lightly put the idea forward to him. If you know the gentleman well enough find out his interest and work from that. At least you know where you stand.
