Get a single velvet curtain panel on eBay. Velvet blocks light entirely, and also looks fantastic. They are also regularly fabricated in very long lengths, up to 120". People pay lots of money for a PAIR of velvet drapes, but a single panel can be gotten very reasonably.
I use them throughout my living room in different, but coordinating colors, and they look terrific. I got each one for under $25 (including shipping) on eBay. I got one for just $10 (including shipping).

Since its the end of the summer you might be able to find some really heavy good beach towels at dirt cheap prices somewhere like a bed bath and beyond or something. Either that or go to loehmanns.com and try to find cheap drapes...If you're willing to go to Home Depot and spend a little bit more money (not much) you can get something called Blackout Blinds that they will cut to a custom size to fit your window. Just ask them, they'll know what you're talking about.

Same thing happened to me. If you don't mind looking a little trashy use aluminum foil. Great thing about foil is that if you are going to have a girl or something come over you can take it down real quick and the room is back to looking nice. foil will also keep out alot of heat from the sun.

Cut big black trash bags open and tape them up. It works every time! Better yet, why not just buy a sleep mask at your local drug store and save yourself the trouble?
