As Alphonse states in his well written answer, the Greeks were the first in classifying the arts.
Cinema is relatively new (only 100 something yrs.) and when it demonstrated its artistic capabilities it was labeled as the 7th art.
Of course, now we know that there are more than 7.

Now days posters, performances and multimedia are also considered arts.
