You have to write over them several times. If you want to wipe out the entire drive killdisk is a good free program. If you want to write over specific files Norton Utilities has a wipe info feature, but I have never tried it so I don't know how well it works.

Third Link from the bottom of page - Hard Disk Scrub v2.1, and to be sure when deleting files, check "Heavy Scrub" to overwrite the data at least three times, and the program is Freeware.... ( No Cost) Small download... Good Luck

There's a free program called "Eraser" available for download at the below link. You can set it to write over the files numerous times, up to 35 times. It would be extremely difficult if not impossible to recover files that are overwitten that many times. Good luck.

Get the utility soft ware that will x&0 over the free space on the hared drive norton use to have one out that was called the complete deleater

Shift-Delete
then clean you disk with disk-defragment utility. Start->All Programs->Accessories->SystemTools->Disk Defragmentor.

you are out of luck as there are experts who can recreate some of the data even if you hit it with a hammer
