We had a fire in our microwave after the waxed paper around a potoato caught fire. Does anyone know if it would be safe to use again? Also waxed paper is supposed to be microwave safe, is it common for it to catch fire?

It is perfectly safe to use the microwave, Wax paper is not intended to be used that way in a microwave. Potatoes do not need to be wrapped when baking them in the microwave, The reason potatoes are wrapped(usually with aluminum foil) in conventional ovens is to keep the skin from getting hard and crisp. In a microwave the skin does not get hard and crisp.

Unless you had some melting in the oven cavity there is no problem in using it. Many have thermal fuses that will shut the unit down if it gets too hot in the oven cavity.

It is safe to use, and i'm not so sure about the wax paper, after all candles are made of wax and paper because the burn one way or another, what could have happened is that the wax melted off and the paper burned. anyway next time try plastic wrap, or just stick the potato in there alone (thats what i do).
