I had the exact same problem in my homeroom and the only way to get people to stand up is to set an example for everyone in your homeroom. Don't preach because that will just make them not want to stand up at all. If you stand up, then some other people will stand up and the people sitting down will just look like lame idiots and they end up standing up too. It works.

For some people, the Pledge is kind of touchy. It does, first of all, tread a bit on the idea of separation of church and state, with its "one nation under God" line. It's kind of insulting when people don't stand up for the Pledge. Or when loud obnoxious drunk people don't stand for the National Anthem. But it's truly a great thing to live in a country where we have the choice to speak our minds, to reject reciting or singing something we don't want to, and to be different from each other while at the same time sharing our great country.

I am glad to see there is hope for America's youth yet!
I have to agree with MomofTwo. People have the freedom to stand or not, even though their disrespect is repulsive to me. They should be thankful that they have the right to sit, but stand in gratitude of that, if nothing else. What other country would give them the freedom to be so disrespectful? NONE! And in many countries, they'd choose to stand or find themselves dangling on the end of a rope. They have NO idea how good they've got it!

Along time ago, when we were all proud citizens, this was a common occurrence. We stand up for the Pledge prior to union meetings.

Next time you have an essay, term paper etc... to write, write about why you believe the Pledge should be stood up for. It'll give the people who agree with you the guts to stand up for it too.

You don't. Part of the reason we HAVE a pledge of allegiance is because we have the freedom NOT to stand up if we don't want to.

That said, I would stand up with you, with my hand over my heart, and recite the whole thing. :)

Well, you could go through the meaning behind the pledge and maybe the history behind it so that it means something to them. Other than that, just let them exercise their right to not say it if they choose.

Honey you don't get them to. Trying to will only make them not want to even more. The best thing to do is to stand yourself just like you always do. Maybe when they see your devotion they will realize what it really means and start on their own. We can not make anyone do anything they don't want to do. We can only show them through our own actions the honor of it. Just keep being loyal to our great nation and God will bless you for it.

You don't. If they don't want to say the Pledge, it's their right as an American citizen not to. Much the same as people who don't go to church. Just because you don't go to church doesn't mean you don't believe in God.

You can't. It is their choice. However, you can require that if they do not participate, that they must just sit silently and not disrupt the pledge in any way.
