I need to write an essay on Capote's purpose of writing In Cold Blood and I planned on writing about how he created a new genre combining journalism, nonfiction, and fiction. I need to know if Im heading in the right direction and if theres any suggestions as to what literary elements i should use to back this up. Any help would be great THANKS!

Yes, You r heading in the right direction. Capote's masterpiece "In Cold Blood" was the very first example of "Reportage". The literary elements are all so apparent throughout the book..... Think of the way we first meet Perry, the description we are given right from the beginning we kind of feel sorry for him, this man child. And did you notice how it's always windy in the town of Holcomb. Really you need to re read a few chapters here and there to really absorb the book. Keep in mind this was Capotes shot to fame and his eventual undoing. There are some things that had happened even before copote showed up at the sceen of the crime and he couldn't have possibly known. Some details are manipulated and its up you to figure out fact from fiction. I hope this helps..if not...well it was nice to revisit such a mind blowing (no pun intended ) book

Just read the book after being inspired by the movie... what a great topic for your essay. Seems Capote's genius appears often in his descriptions... and his reporting as a journalist comes through as well. As for literary elements, I'd use a quote from both the movie and the book about how the heads of the bodies "looked like Christmas snow." Talk about a bold way to write nonfiction!

If you don't already know this, the MLA International Bibliography is a terrific place to find sources. Also try Expanded Academic. These are electronic databases that should be available on a university or public library webpage. I tutor at a local university's writing center and I suggest to all of my students to consider not only the work, but also the author (his lifestyle, the time period in which he wrote, the culture of that time, etc). I think if you start with these ideas, you will have a good start to forming your paper. If you need help with citation, be sure to check out the sites for MLA citation, APA citation, etc. depending on which style you choose or are required to use for citation.

Yes, you are on the correct path. It was considered a new genre, and it was a "first". A random criminal act with such sadistic qualities had never been reported in such detail. Our current media is abundant this these types of stories. Good luck.

Whatever you do....
Don't watch the movie.
It was the creepiest thing I've ever seen - I wish I had never seen it....
