A US passport is valid for 10 years, if it was issued when you were 16 or older. If you are 15 or younger, the passport is valid for only 5 years.
An expired passport can still be used as proof of citizenship (but not as a valid travel document).
When you renew your passport, you have to send them your old passport, but they will return it to you, along with your new passport.
