It’s called the Library catalog.
You may remember using a card catalog in your public or school library when you were younger. Card catalogs were lots of little drawers with cards in them. Each card described a book that the library owned. The cards were filed in order by author or title or subject. Once you found the card for a book you wanted, you would write down the information from the card that told you where the book could be found on the shelf.
Almost no card catalogs exist anymore. The cards began to be replaced by computers beginning in the 1970s. Just about every Library in the US now uses a computerized catalog. While lots of people miss the low-tech activity of quietly flipping through the cards in a drawer – librarians much prefer the computerized version! For one thing – no more filing thousands of little cards! But more importantly, a computerized catalog makes it much easier for library patrons (that’s you!) to find the materials they need.
