I answer questions based on long experience, and what I know to be true. In some cases, like relationship questions, it's more of personal opinion; but I try to be helpful. I try to address what the person is actually asking, if they seem to be serious (which is why I'm answering this).
I don't bother with stupid questions, such as those that indicate some kind of racism or bigotry, or just plain raunchy.
In my opinion, it seems to me that many people answer with a non-sequiter, merely to get a couple of points.

It depends on the amount of intelligence in the question. Lots of morons here aren't really asking questions but are ranting and raving in the form of questions.
Take for example the person who asked the question just before you. "Murphy" asked a "question" about Karl Rove which wasn't really a question, just his own little rant against Rove. He doesn't want anybody to truly answer his question, he just wants people to see his opinion and he wants people to express their agreement with him. So I gave him an "answer" which wasn't really an answer.

If, in my opinion, it is a genuine request for information I try to answer it.
If it is some screed, I tend to give them 40 lashes with whatever wit I can muster.

well.. .there are two points to be made...
A. most people don't seem to have any facts to answer a question with... they only have opinion with no idea why they believe what they believe...
B. when you do use facts and support your answer... people ignore it or give un-cited propaganda back as a response... so it seems to be fairly pointless to cite your info, since most people don't care about facts or why you believe what you believe...
why should they care why you believe what you believe when they don't even care why they believe what they believe...

Obviously people have misunderstood your questions. Dumb it down a bit and stop with the spell check and maybe you will get more answers. Quality over quantity, I say. Take the few good, solid answers you get and praise the people who gave them too you.

Are rhetorical questions an exercise in futility?
Also, is it rude to answer a question with a question?

why do you care what we do.............I don't wish to engage in lengthy arguments so I can prove to you I read the world's papers every day. If I feel I know enough about any given subject, I feel free to answer the asker, not people like you who want to be the judge of how intelligently someone asnwered a question??????????????????????????
