Using a colon is fine... but usually you'll have more than three in your list. When just using three, keep it as a sentence.
Our spelling words this week are "whatever", "something" and "etcetera."

NO not when you use the "are" this way you just list the words
The second way you would use the colon. "The spelling words of the week: whatever, something, et cetera.

No I don't think so because in your list, it has no conjunction so then it would be whatever,
something,
and etcetera but otherwise the way you made ur list is correct !

No, you don't need a colon if you put quotations around every word in the list. If you do not, then you need a colon.
