So the catcher has the ball, waiting to get the runner out. if say, the catcher is lying on the ground, why doesn't he just jump over him, out of the reach of the hand that holds the ball? is it legal for him to just step on the catcher? i mean plowing him down just wont work for some people

this came up when watching the tigers game tonight when placido pilanco was sacrificing himself on a routine double play, then the ball was bobbled and it was too late to turn back. i would have just cleared the catcher right onto home.

well a lot of times catchers are able to hold onto the ball when you crash into them but the thing is that if you jumped over them, you'd have a hard time getting high enough to clear the arms or just a small part of the glove. its not as easy as it appears in Major league 2 when "Willie Mays-Hayes" jumps over the white sox catcher because you have to get the catcher leaning down without any reflexes at all and land on the plate so that he cant turn around real quick and tag you. plus there's a real big risk of injury coming down on your hands like that. Your best bet when you get caught like that is to hit the catcher as hard as you can and make sure you get a good portion of the mit to jar the ball loose.

There actually have been players that have "jumped" over the catcher, and scored. Doesnt happen very often as not many players can jump high enough.

Also, when you jump, you are a sitting duck just asking to be tagged out, and drastically increase your injury risk. You are better off with just trying to run the catcher over.

yeah, then polanco left the game with an injured neck and shoulder. it sounds like it makes sense, but beleive me its easier said than done. ive tried doin crazy stuff to get around the catcher, but you gotta remember he's not a statue standing still.. he can move to get you.
