Is it o.k. to turn off my filter while I'm feeding my fish? All the food gets sucked into the skimmer box, before the bottom fish can get any.

Yeah, it is saltwater. I have a royal gramma that likes to hide out near the bottom, and while my damsels and tomato clown are pretty agressive eaters, the gramma is not.

I do it with both my guppy and my salt water tank (in the case of the salt water I need to give the food a chance to hit the bottom to feed my horseshoe crab - 15 minutes). I have been doing so for over a year and no harm has come to either tank.

It is perfectly OK to turn off your filter while feeding your fish. However, I might suggest that you try releasing the fish food below the surface of water, preferably in the water flow. Doing this helps prevent loss of food into the skimmer box. It is also important to not feed too much food at one time. The correct procedure for feeding any fish is as follows:

Feed fish with small pinches, making sure they eat all food between pinches. Dominant fish always eat first. Once they finish eating all other fish will get a chance. The whole process should take about five minutes. Start by feeding once a day, and monitor your fish's health. If you notice aggression between fish add more feedings. If your fish become obese subtract feedings. The most common sign of aggression in fish is a torn up tail. As a side note, I always keep my fish a little hungry. It helps to make sure they clean up all the leftovers. You can also add blue leg hermit crabs, or serpent starfish to clean up leftovers, if you have a salt water tank.

I'm guessing the food is flake food. Yes turning your filter of for about 10 mins while your fish eat is perfectly fine. I had the same problem, but not anymore.
