sure- there's valid points on both sides, but it seems like a lot of people just use it to express the racism that they've harbored for their whole lives in a context where it won't be considered "as bad".

note: i'm not calling you racist because you're against immigration... i'm saying that many people feel that they are entitled to their racism against mexicans, just because they are against illegal immigration.

You have it backwards, I am against illegal immigration, it is far far from an excuse to engage in racism.

The actual story is that liberals accuse anyone of racism who they cannot debate on a rational basis. It is an old guard tactic from the 70's and it just does not work anymore.

The only disservice this does; other than make liberals look pathetic and clueless, is that there is true racism in the world and the "cry wolf" tactic of the left distracts from this.

I believe the actual debate is about illegal immigration, not immigration as a whole. The U.S has a good record of accepting people into the country from all over the world. Compare our immigration policies to those of France, Japan, and other prominent nations and you'll see the real story. There are some racists, but most people just want people to come here legally and be documented accordingly.

It has nothing to do with racism but with uncontrolled borders. Our ancestors played by the rules at the time. Trouble is, the rules today are almost non-existent, so its partially out of control. This is the main problem (especially after considering 9/11). The first thing that should have been done was to put a stop to all immigration for a while until we had a handle on who is here already! This is not rocket science>

No.

Even the United Farm Workers--a group of immigrant Mexicans--have always been dead set against illegal immigration.

Illegals are not here because they want to be Americans. It is a strictly economic relationship with their prospective employers, and a way to get social services, medical care and education free. Employers use illegals to intimidate US citizen workers, keeping pay low and offering poor working conditions on the threat that they will hire even more illegal labor.

Nobody in their right mind is against immigration. We are a nation of immigrants of one kind or another. But the days of open immigration are over.Immigration should be legal. If we close the borders and force immigration through legal channels, then we shouldn't have schools overflowing with kids who can't speak English, thousands of undocumented criminals mixing in among the workers, and other social problems that create real issues for communities nationwide.

For some, maybe. But in the case of the ones that are seriously against illegal immigration, it is a case of being for our country's laws. They are against ALL illegal immigration, no matter what color or country they are from. It drives me INSANE when people equate the illegal immigrants to the poor Mexicans. There are many more illegal immigrants than just the Mexicans. They are just the "scape goats" because they are coming in at a faster pace, and they are in greater numbers. But any immigrant that is here illegally is an illegal immigrant, and they need to be deported.

So I think before accusing one of being racist, you need to explore all of the facts.

Your "additional details" comment does seem to hit the nail on the head. The truth of the matter is that there is some racism against "Mexicans" and as such opposition to immigration can be their safe harbor for that racism. It is easy to oversimplify this debate either way. We need to be careful and thoughtful about what's at stake and who will be accountable for what happens.

If I understand you correctly, you mean the forum of immigration being used to display racism and not the issue itself, then yes. You can read what people say here that is racist involving immigration. But, wanting immigrants to come here legally is not racist, wanting immigrants to be excused from the law is discrimination towards Americans and legal immigrants.

It's not really racism. It is about hoardes of people breaking our immigration laws, sneaking across the border like thieves, and stealing billions of dollars in services from American citizens.

Why do you think you have to call it racism? It's more criminal than anything else.

Immigration is part of life because people tend to go to other places for jobs, adventure and business. It is not exactly to air racism in what people want.

No, I feel that no matter what country someone has immigrated to, it should be that country's responsibility to keep track of all people who enter there, whether or not they become legal citizens. It's got nothing to do with racism.
