If you conduct an experiment and get a certain result, another person must be able to conduct the same experiment and get the same result. If you get different results the chances are something was done differently. If you are not sure what was done differently then you will not know what variable changes things. Plus, what if you did an experiment and ended up with a cure to cancer but could not exactly replicate that experiment because you did not have exact directions written down?

Detailed step by step written procedures are an essential part of any scientific experiment because its important that results can be replicated by any competent person, in a suitably equipped laboratory. A good example is "cold fusion". The claims made for this could not be repeated by other competent scientists elsewhere.

Reproducibility is important in science. In research the experimental procedures often systematically varied in order to establish optimal experimental conditions. Every detail must be documented so that a successful experiment can be replicated. As a researcher, I read the procedures used by others both to improve my own procedures and to find ways to improve upon experiments done by others. Science advances by these incremental improvements.
