Pregnancy & Childbirth | Chocolate Consumption by Pregnant Women Has Positive Impact on Infants' Behavior, Study Says
[Apr 09, 2004]
Consuming chocolate during pregnancy can have a positive impact on a newborn infant's behavior, according to a study published in the February issue of the journal Early Human Development, Reuters reports. Katri Raikkonen and colleagues at the University of Helsinki asked 300 pregnant women to record their chocolate consumption and stress levels, according to Reuters (Reuters, 4/7). Six months after the infants were delivered, the researchers surveyed the women about their infants' behavior to ascertain whether the amount of chocolate their mothers consumed during pregnancy had an effect on the infants (Chicago Sun-Times, 4/8). The researchers found that the women who had eaten chocolate reported that their infants had more reactions such as smiling and laughter, compared with women who did not eat chocolate during pregnancy (Reuters, 4/7). Women who reported being stressed during pregnancy -- especially women who "never" or "rarely" consumed chocolate -- reported more "negatively tuned ratings" of infant behavior, according to the study (Raikkonen et al., Early Human Development, February 2004). In addition, the infants of stressed women who regularly consumed chocolate had "less fear of new situations" than other infants, according to the New York Post (Hoffman, New York Post, 4/8). The researchers concluded that chemicals in chocolate associated with "positive mood" may be passed to infants in utero, according to Reuters (Reuters, 4/7). The researchers concluded, "In addition to producing subjective feelings of psychological well being, chocolate may have effects at multiple environmental and psychological levels" (Early Human Development, February 2004).

Chocolate is always good--pregnant or not. :D The key is, eat it in moderation. For every large piece of chocolate you consume, you're taking in a lot of fat and calories...empty calories. Plus, everything you eat is broken down and also "fed" to your baby. It's better for her to have nutritious foods than chocolate.
I say eat chocolate (There's nothing worse than getting in the way of a pregnant woman and her cravings, lol!) but do so in moderation. :)

A little is ok to much can cause your glucose levels to escalate out of control or cause blood pressure to rise to high.
In other words be careful.

Everything in moderation. Beware of the sugar and fat more than the caffeine.
