It is supposed to level the playing field. It doesn't give big market teams like the Cowboys, Raiders, or Eagles monetary advantages over anyone else.

It allows smaller market teams the ability to stay competitive with the larger markets. All though the Yankees haven't won all the Championships lately by far the are the most talented team, and have a payroll larger than any other team. Green Bay, Cincy, tampa, wouldn't be able to keep any good players if Teams from NY could buy them all. It keeps a competitive balance in the league.

Its to make it fair for every team. You see, there is a Salary Cup limit of money. And each player has a price that they are worth. Say the salary cup your have is 600 Million dollars. You can hire say... Tom Brady for like 50 Million Dollors and it will take the 50 Mill, subtract from the 600 mill. And if you are Negative then yu must send someone to free agency.

To keep all teams on an equal footing to make the competition more
competitive. With no salary cap the wealthier teams would "buy" the best players and would dominate the competition.

The cap is so teams can't get the best player at every position and slaughter the opposition every game. It is good for the NFL because you don't see the same team win every Super Bowl. It keeps the sport interesting.

The salary/remuneration for a particular job is the market value for a particular profession and designation at the city/town where the office is located. Job postings at websites like Monster, Yahoo HotJobs and Careerbuilder carry information about salaries. The Govt Dept of Labor, (www.bls.gov) Bureau of statistics has information about median salaries for different professions and details of additional compensation offered. Other online resources are salary.com and payscale. Your salary will also depend on your educational qualification and how you handle your career.

To keep things as even as possible in terms of spreading out the talent. I for one don't want to see football become like baseball--where the Yankees buy up every good player and tip the scale in their favor. That is totally boring to watch---unless you are a Yankees fan (which I'm not). I'd prefer to see some actual competition.
