First we had a war on poverty. Poverty won. Then we had a war on drugs. Drugs won. Now we're having a war on terror. I don't see terror ending anytime soon. Clearly, we are using the wrong metaphor. Even Bush seems to recognize this now. Now he says we are at war with Islamic fascists. That makes a lot more sense than saying you are at war with a tactic.
How do you end terror? The British showed one way when dealing with IRA terrorists. On the one hand, they were absolutely ruthless in infiltrating the IRA and imprisoning the perpetrators. But on the other hand, they eventually had to deal with the political issues that were underlying the acts of terrorism.
I think calling it a war just legitimizes and empowers the terrorists, and runs the risk of bringing us down to their level. Better to treat terror as a crime, the same way we treat the use of chemical or biological weapons. We can't declare war on those weapons, that would be absurd, and in fact would only guarantee that those weapons would be used against us in that "war." Instead we enter into a treaty to outlaw them, and we police and punish violators. By the way, the plot to blow up planes over the Atlantic was stopped by good old-fashioned police work, not by war.

Of course the war on terror isn't working. You can't shoot or bomb terror. You have to do something different.
However that is much more difficult and requires intelligence.
Firstly, you must use all legal means to bring the people who break the laws to justice. This is hard, when you are dealing with suicide bombers, because you cannot punish them, and they cannot give you information or evidence.
But you must also address seriously the problems that give rise to the situation. This probably means tackling poverty, drugs, as well as alienation and intolerance. All this is very difficult, and would require an effort on everyone's part.
If anyone thinks that bashing harder and harder is the solution to any problem other than driving a nail int a wall, they need to actually think a bit harder. If you want to get your way, yelling, screaming and kicking only works for very young babies.

There is no solution at the moment. Agent 86 is right. (See above.) Islamic terror is unlike anyhting seen so far. One cannot argue or negotiate. Muslims are given a platform regularly but their arguments are full of holes, just listen. I mean the ones who live in the UK. A Muslim intellectual is a contradiction in terms -- such a phenomenon does not exist. They view everything from an extremely narrow perspective -- at best their arguments are childishly naive, at worst mad -- even the so-called middle-class 'integrated' ones. And no one dares say point that out in debates on TV or Radio for fear of being accused of racism and so on. It is all terribly depressing.

Yes! Totally. The Democrats would have handled this much differently. I, being a social liberal, believe we have already found a terrorists and done our job. We need to move out because the people in America are angry with the President. There will never be peace. But i will say to you, the freedom really isn't free, so you have to stand up and fight sometimes. When a war gets old, it too old though.

We need to handle terrorism like it should be. As a law enforcement problem. These people are nothing but common criminals! It worked for the Germans with the Baader Mienoff Gang, the Italians with the Red Brigade, the British with the IRA and Clinton with the first WTC bombing and the Murrah Building bombing. Hunt them down, capture them, try them and sentence them!

The only way to change things is throught the hearts and souls of people. People are being raised to think in this terrorist strain and the parents need to jump in and stop the brain washing. We need to raise our children in love and respect for one another and I don't see this happening anytime soon. There is no other way, so til then we need to be viligant and protect what we have. I guess the final answer is education. How many Middle East countries don't even allow education for girls and the education for boys is filled with theocrastic political beliefs that are anti non-Muslim.

That is what the terrorists want you to think. They know westerners are weak and have short memories. We have no stomach for war (not saying war is good). The extremists are willing to fight to the death. To die a martyr is the ultimate sacrifice one can make for allah.
I don't believe these people are willing to share the world with anyone else.

Nothing wrong with the war on terror. If you don't do anything they just get stronger. I never did understand why Iraq was the next target in the war against terror, however.

I think its funny that the more terrorists appear during the Bush presidency, the more the conservatives claim they're doing everything right.
When the U.S. was attacked on Sept. 11th, our response was to become more agressive, yet conservatives somehow believe that those who hate our country will have a different reaction. Let's just face it, when someone gets in your face, it makes you more angry and violent, not less.

your question it self answer your question. bush has to realise this.
terror is also weapon of mass destruction. poor people use them.for many reason.
because of this act you are now fully aware of the happenings in other part of world. what ever way you justify the move but the awareness is there. and so the media has to keep you informed about it before you raise your question.
