Make a big square with the 8 toothpicks (i.e. 2 toothpicks per side). Make a cross inside the big square using the remaining 4 toothpicks, inorder to divide the big square into 4 small squares. So that's 4 squares, plus the 1 big square, a total of 5 squares.
