The Geologists and Paleontologists have, IIRC, identified four 'great dyings' in which over 90% of the life on Earth was destroyed. (They suspect a couple of more even older, but haven't quite proven them as yet)

The one 65 million years ago that whacked the dinosaurs is only the latest in a series (and the best known and most studied)

I live in Tucson, AZ. and about 300 miles to the north is a meteor crater that's about a mile across and over a thousand feet deep. It was formed (IIRC) about 25,000 years ago when a chunk of rock about the size of a 3 car garage hit the ground at around 30,000 miles/hour. And that 1,000 feet deep is what's left after 25,000 years of erosion has 'filled in' the crater.

If you look at the craters on the Moon it's pretty difficult not to agree that we live in a 'cosmic shooting gallery' as far as debris are concerned. Look at Schumaker-Levi and count your blessings it hit Jupiter instead of Earth.

Most likely the planet won't be destroyed, but there could certainly be a collision with an asteroid or comet that would wipe out a large amount of life on Earth, including (especially) the human race. It's happened before. I recommend reading Bill Bryson's book "A Short History of Nearly Everything" ... he has some interesting information about this subject.

Not anytime soon because it will get caught into the orbit and if worst comes to worst, the piece of debris will be too small to wipe out all life on this planet.

Depends on what you mean by Debris. It is certainly at risk from being destroyed by a large Asteroid, Meteor or Comet.

Yeah, I heard that an alien pod was going to land in the Sea of Japan sometime soon. But the danger lies not in the spacecraft, but the giant tentacle monster resting inside.
