I have heard the the US Mint is panning on doing away with the penny. I don't understand have our system can continue working with out our beloved copper friend>

All vicious rumors.

If the federal government did away with the penny, the only way they could raise set-money taxes would be a nickel at a time. And imagine the anger THAT would cause!

They have plans to continue the penny until 2009 for the 100th anniversary of the Lincoln cent. After that they have made no plans to stop production.
