The updater isn't supposed to "respond" when you plug in your iPod. You just plug in your iPod, then run the updater.

You may also want to try resetting your iPod. The manual that came with your iPod will tell you how.

Take the iPod into the Apple save, and ask them what they could do to fix it. in the adventure that they allow you to recognize they're unable to fix it you may want to likely ask for a sparkling one. in the adventure that they don't provide you a sparkling iPod you may both count number your losses or argue you deserve a sparkling one from a organization as large and supposedly good as Apple. saying such issues as 'I predicted more effective efficient from Apple' and 'possibly i will purchase from diverse organizations next time' might want to help. And in case you don't love your iPod besides, there's a sparkling Zune out. save in options, once you're talking to someone on the Apple save, you may want to try to be somewhat assertive.

Get a Creative Nomad Jukebox 30 Gig player and you won't have that problem. I didn't get all caught up in the "ipod" hype.
