Here's a site where you can go for the laws in your... State... sometimes landlords do not share these laws with the tenants and more or less your left in the dark about your rights.
Every state is different in the ways they make them laws up. There's two sates in the USA that has to this day to pass laws to protect the tenants. http://www.uslandlord.com/ just go to Laws & Statutes and then pick the state you live in theres you laws up-dated at the time you go on this site.
This way its good to know you right unless, some people end up with a bad landlord because... there bluff works most of the time because of lack of knowledge of your rights.
After you have looked at your rights and theirs.
Then you know where you can go as far as taking up for yourself.
If your civil rights has been broking you can call your local...Legal Aid and they will give you the number of a Pro-Bone-O Lawyer the help you in any problems you endure.*
http://www.lawyers.com/ is a site where you can talk to a chat with an attorney live also on there site... you can get a lawyer in your home town if you wish to go that way.

I am not exactly sure where you would file in your area (try the civil department), but YES you can file a complaint. I would get it in writing from those other tenants that is a part of fair housing and they should not be discussing anyones information with anyone!

At this point it is hear say. I would document everything you know and you have heard. You need dates, names of the other tenants and exactly what was said by whom. Write it all down and make it as brief and to the point as you can.
Then call whoever you have in your city that handles tenant complaints. Go see them and show them what you have and ask what you can do from there.

If you can't pay your rent on time, how can you possibly afford the thousands of dollars in legal fees it would cost you to pursue this as a civil matter?
It's not very professional of your landlord to gossip, but it's hardly against any law.
How about just telling him (or her) that you don't care to listen to gossip about other tenants and then walking away?

The landlord is most likely someone just paid to live there and clean and do maintenance. If he is, who do you write your checks to, do you mail them in? Contact the company who has hired him. If he is the owner/landlord, unless you have proof or witness's, you could take him to court for slander. He said...wont work

i am a landlord. so threaten the landlord w/ privacy of information law...even though I do think it applies to gossip, it will scare them. or threaten to call the city inspector...............that always scares the crap out of me !
on another note as a landlord.pay your rent on time or get out ! they can evict you for short paying or being late.

you might want to check your lease and see if there is a privacy clause or try to get a hold of the new privacy act laws.

Instead of complaining, how about doing what you promised...i.e. pay your rent on time. Then he has nothing to complain about!

If you have proof of this and its not true, you could possibly sue him for slander.
