i want to just leave this life in america. getting a job, worrying about income, paying bills, for gas, and all that. i just want to drop it all and live in the wild.. preferably in Jamaica (i have my reasons). I want to just roam the island, living off food i get.. like fruit..fish...etc...etc.. sleep in a hut i build with my own hands. and just live what i consider would be a 'pure way of life'. a way of life that is stress free. and i would make the money i need by simply selling things at the markets.. but is there the chance of getting murdered, robbed,or ne thing like that? people tell me that it will happen since most of the pop. are poor.and would the government just take me and send me back to the states? wud i have to get jamaican citizenship (i dont plan to live like this forever, maybe for about 2-5 years. is this idea possible? please help me out...

Maybe that wouldn't be the best idea. U'd stick out like a sore thumb...picture this white guy in a predominantly black country living on the streets? it's too high-risk. I say u come and stay in a low-rent hut or something and try to meet a virtuous black jamaican woman (like me...but i'm taken) to marry and settle down with. then you can live in her community, build a small fishing boat and set up a small fishing business where you catch the fish and your wife and mullatto kids sell them on the streets. I mean it wont be cost free living but it will be pretty darn close. that other girl who says u should be generous to the poor people come on now that could be way more expensive than living in the US , worse it would lead them to believe u do have money and want to rob u...i say u act poor and have a sad story about how ur family cut u off and you have nothing. Contrary to popular belief jamaicans are for the most part a well-off people it's just that idle spending contributes to impoverishment, trust me nobody has expensive things like a "poor" jamaican. Neway try my suggestion u wont go wrong.

This is definately possible. Do not be afraid to live your dreams.
Jamaica is not as scary as you might think. it would be best to stay out of the city, and anyway that sounds like what you want. If you be friendly and generous with the poor people around you you will have no problems. You must look at things from their point of view. You are coming from America, what theysee as a very rich prosperous country and somewhere they wish they could live and you are coming to their humble home in the mountains, you will need them to show you how to survive, so you should have SOMETHING to give them. You don't have to follow my advice, you could go there and try to survive totally on your own, but it would not be wise. There are many people who live against established society in the mountains of Jamaica. There are well established Rasta camps with governments of their own. I would reccommend visiting these people, don't be scared of them Rastas believe in peace and non violence. You will be surprised that some Americans live there. The Jamaican government will probably leave you alone once you do not get into trouble with the law. I think it is a great idea. Please do not be discouraged.

Sure you can roam the country but it would be best if you check into some sort of accomodation for rent. Think about it- whose land would you build your hut on, whose fruit and fish? No one will harm you just link up with some Rastas and you will be fine.

Canada has better weed than Jamaica?!

i hav so much to say i dont know where to start.
1st of all, Jamaica isnt just bush-country as many ppl would say. i dont think u can survive like that unless u take survival cskill classes.
i live here, and i dont know if anybody can do that. the unihabited areas r very hard to navigate. its beautiful out here but i'm not really sure thast possible. u probably need to consult a surival guide or something like that

p.s. laja82, that chance is as great in any other country. it's still safe too come vacation or live here and that risk lies in any other country.

Yup that's right. Leave you first world country and first world lifestyle to live vagrant in a third world country. There's a chance of you getting murdered or robbed in you're living in a 'hut' ANYWYHERE!

Nice idea but are you crazy I say don't even think about going to Jamaica with this dream of yours you wont live to fulfill it try other safer islands around the Caribbean where you ll be able to do the things you want maybe some of the smaller islands such as ANGUILLA, SABA, I often thought of having a simple life in another country but Jamaica NO NO
