A really fantastic series. Many people who don't like them are looking for simple good/evil fantasy plots, but Donaldson's characters are much more complex than that.
If you haven't read them, go check out his sci-fi "Gap" series. Also very good; creepy and disturbing at times, but very good.

The plot was beyond weird, the morals were bad, but I was captivated for some reason by Thomas Covenant. The way Donaldson described him and wrote about him made me feel like I was there seeing him in person sharing in his life somehow.

Didn't like the first trilogy the first time I read them, because Covenant seemed like such a whining wimp, denying the reality that he could see and feel. I was more into Tarzan at the time; Tarzan, now there's a real man. LOL.
I enjoyed the series the second time around though. I'm eagerly awaiting the next book in the third trilogy just like you.

I tosed the book in the pile I get rid of.
Could not stand the character because he never attempts to improve anything and seems to enjoy being able to whine a lot.
Not the type of people I like being around.

The protag, Thomas Covenant, is a whiny, horrifying, fecal pile of a human being. He goes from angry and bitter to bitter and angry. He can't get over himself and he's a pisshead to everyone around him. I guess if you like that sort of thing for 1000 pages, well, more power to you. I was so repulsed that I never finished book 3.

I absolutely loathed that book. I forced myself to read it and ended up hating that Thomas character more and more. Why would you make your main character rape a 15 year old girl? And why make him a lepper? It just doesn't make sense. I like heroes who conduct themselves with pride, honour and dignity like Aragorn, not some pathetic wanker who whinges and whines all the time. I even got the sense that the author didn't like what he was writing and couldn't believe it when it actually started selling. And the ring, the magic ring, what an original idea.....
