Your yellow paper is a pH indicator. When a "base" is applied to it, it will change color. It is probably reacting with OH- ions present in the backing soda solution.

Sorry, I don't know the exact indicator chemical in your yellow paper. We had that same yellow paper at my high school too.

the paper is acting like an indicator. it's just the acid/base reaction and the change in pH. Certain colors of paper do this
