On my dvd player along with tons of other electronics, it has a white, yellow, and red cable. The red cable is never used, why is it on there?

Like the first answer to this question says. The red cable is for audio. Both the red and white cables are for audio, and plugging them both in allows you to receive "stereo" sound, like surround sound etc... If your television is older, it may have only a plug in for the yellow and white cable, which means that your audio will still work, it just won't be in "stereo" or in other words the left and right side of your audio will put out identical sounds, meaning that you won't get a surround sound effect. If you have the capability of plugging in both the red and white audio cables, you should plug them both in for the best sound quality.

Red cable is the Right audio channel; "red" starts wtih "R" and so does "right", which is the way to remember that. If you are not using the red cable you are not getting stereo and are hearing the left audio channel only.
