I have a '89 Ford Ranger. It idles fine, I can give it gas, no problem, but when I put it in gear it dies. Or will run real rough then die. I replaced plugs, rotor, and distributor cap (it needed bad) but now it will not stay running. Thanks to all.

Okay starts fine, will idle real well, can actually floor it idling, but when I put it in gear it will die. Acts like it is not getting gas. It has half a tank of gas. I cannot even drive it 10 feet before it dies. Thanks again.

Checked hoses, and they are fine. No leaks or disconnection anywhere. Could it be the PCV valve??

standard or automatic tranny could be a bad clutch or it could be a problem with the catalytic convertor Ihad a car do that although it ran it just didn't want to go to fast in gear check for exhaust coming out the pipes while the vehicle is in drive just remember to set the parking brake

Fuel pressure might be bad or the idle might be too low. Either than that check for a bad fuel pressure regulator.

You have a vacuum hose lose or disconnected. Check all your non fluid hoses. Check for holes and disconnections.

my guess would be if it runs until you put it in gear, then it dies it might be the MAP sensor. just a guess

You probably have a vacuum leak in it somewhere. Sorry not much info there.
