"We apologize for any inconvienience , but windows did not start
successfully,

A recent hardware or software change may have cause this.

A previous startup attempt was interrupted becuase of power failure,
or the reset button was pressed. Please choose an option below by
using the up or down arrows on your keyboard:

Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Promt
Last Known Configuration
Start Windows Normally

Now, I have tried each of these and none will work . Does anyone know
what I can do?

When i select an option, it just restarts after a black screen apears.

I force shut it by holding the startup button.

Ouch!

Two possibilities, a hardware problem or a software problem.

If you have recently opened up your case and messed around in there (such as installing a new card, a new drive, or something) OR you simply dropped it on the floor, then you might have accidentally

a.pulled a cable
b.broke something
c.disconnected something
d.your hooked something incompatible
e.your power supply is not enough to power everything

So, open it up and look in there for something obvious.

This is all very unlikely in my opinion so it is probably a software issue. You probably have a notorious virus in there or you went around messed with settings that you shouldn't have.

My advice, get it over to a Fry's, Circuit City, or a Best Buy as soon as possible. Because if you can't even bootup in the safe mode, then there is not much that you can do.

If you have the Windows Cd you can just put it inside your cd drive and restart the computer. After booting from cd choose the option 'Repair Windows' this will ensure that your three boot files are not corrupted. You can also do a 'chdsk' from there.

Another options would be available in case your safe mode works . But after reading your message I'm assuming that you cannot boot up in safe mode. However, just in case you manage to get in Safe Mode by tapping 'F8' as soon at the computer boots up is worth trying a System Restore from Start ->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore.
Good Luck

choose last know configuration. If that doesn't help then you will have to reinstall windows back on your computer. Seems like some files for windows as been erased of your computer and now windows can't run properlly. You should have the CD that came with the computer (it should be 2 CD's) If your computer came with windows then you can reinstall it with those CD's

If you have added any hardware then you can try removing it. I don't think it is going to help you much.

The best solution is to reinstall Windows. Once you have finished reinstalling make yourself an Automated System Recovery disk. This will allow you to retrieve your operating system back so that you will be able to save your files.

If you have the set up CDs pop one in the CD drive and reboot and reinstall the system, it's easiest in the long run, just be more careful next time and ALWAYS do backups regularly

You need to do a repair installation. Get your Windows XP cd out and follow the instructions at this website.
