Since you want to keep everything, then start looking for available nooks and crannies throughout the house to store your things. You can get long/low storage boxes at Wal-mart or Target's to take advantage of the space underneath your bed. Some people "decorate" with pretty boxes or even stylish suitcases stacked in a corner to give them extra storage space. That sounds awful, but I've seen it done in magazines and it can look quite attractive.
If you can, use furniture that doubles for storage. (Instead of a plain chair, use an odomen or even a stylish piano bench designed for that purpose.)
Consider storing your out of season clothes in another room or in your attic and rotate them when the seasons change. Install extra shelving so you can "store" your books or extra knick-knacks in plain sight if you want to. One of our friends had shelving installed near the top of the ceiling around the perimeter of the room, and she uses it to display/store her children's stuffed animals and toys. That really took advantage of space that is normally "dead".
Choose the things you don't use very often (books you've read, clothing you may have outgrown), and store those in boxes stacked to one side of your closet. Just keep the things you currently use accessible, and stay organized, organized, organized....
Wishing you luck! Hope this helps....
ps - If your budget allows, consider one of the closet inserts available at Lowe's or Home Depot. Those are designed in such a way to help you maximize the use of existing space.

I find it very difficult to get rid of books too. Clothes that haven't been worn for a year should go to the needy, though. Box up everything that you don't really use much. Put the boxes in an attic or garage and throw them away in a year. You'll find that you don't miss them. Or give things to friends. You'll find that once your room (and closet)are less cluttered then you can enjoy it more. If you are a packrat, it's a hard habit to break. I find having someone with me when I try to pitch things helps. My friend says, "Get rid of it" and it makes it easier. Lighten up!

If you have to look at something for longer than 10 seconds, put it to one side of the room. If you can decide within 10 seconds that you need it, put it on the other side of the room. The side you had to think about needs to go either to a shelter or in a garage sale. If everything doesn't sell, take it to a charity.

Weed through everything. Get rid of stuff you have no use for, takes up too much room, clothes you'll never wear. You have to look at everything and decide if its worth keeping.
You'll see how much better you feel with more space.

Limit yourself to 1000 things, books, and cd's count. For every new thing that comes in, something must go. (A pair of socks counts as one). ;)
