My girlfriend had some blood taken the other day and now her right pinkie and index finger are numb. She called the docter and asked about it and the doc. said that it had nothing to do with her getting blood taken. And that she needed to go to her family doc. as soon as she could. She is only 20 years old soooo I woulnt think it would be a stroke. Any Ideas?

She could just have pinched a nerve in her wrist, or some swelling that is pressing on a nerve. Either way icing it should help. She should see her doctor though.
PS. Carpel tunnel affects the forefinger and middle finger. (I have Carpel Tunnel several forms of Tendonitis in my wrists and elbow and it made my fingers go numb too.)

It could be that the phlembotomist hit a nerve when they took her blood. You didn't say that it happened on the same hand...but I am guessing.

Also, I have seen on more than one occasion, a small clot form after blood is taken and then this clot more down to the tip of the finger or a small vein in the hand. If this is the case, the hand or the affected area will often discolor and will feel cooler than the rest of the hand.

Either way, it should resolve...and if it doesn't or gets worse...go see the doctor....particularly if the symptoms change.

She should go to the Emergency room or her family doctor ASAP. She might be having poor blood circulation. If her fingers are with out blood for too long her hand and or fingers might have to.....u know. Don't mean to scare u, but its a possibility. Plus I'm only speak from experience. I also have poor blood circulation in my hands, legs, and feet. and i'm only 22yrs old. Tell or take her to the doctors ASAP.

If your friend is very slim, there is a possibility the tournequet used was too tight and caused a slight injury to the nerve of the arm. If it lasts more than 3 or 4 days, should have it evaluated and treated.

I had a couple of toes go numb when I pinched a nerve in my foot. It lasted about a week. It could be a nerve in her hand, wrist, or elbow. It could be carpal tunnel syndrome. Numbness can be caused by a number of things, so she should go to a doctor just in case.

Yes...it could be several things but she DOES need to see a doctor. It could be that she's hit her ulner nerve in her elbow (funny bone) and it's irritated (your ulner nerve DOES control your pinky and ring fingers), or it could be a brain hemorrhage or anyerism putting pressure on the motor skills part of the left side of her brain. It can happen spontaneously OR from stimulants, and her age wouldn't matter. I know that sounds dramatic but it happened to me (honestly). So, yes...she needs to go.

I wouldn't think it was a stroke, it could be a number of things, including carpal tunnel, or she could of slept on her arm wrong. She does need to see a doctor to have it checked out.
