"Nirvana or Guns 'n' Roses?"
answer: yes.

It's kind of a trick question. It's not like asking "Nirvana or Pearl Jam?" or "GnR or Motley Crue?". It's more like asking "Beatles or Stones?"
Both good. Vastly different. Both influential.
GnR personified the decadence of the late 80's and everything that was both right and wrong about rock music at the time. Nirvana (specifically Cobain) became the face of Alternative music and ironically reversed the right and wrong of rock.

80's rock was full of high-singing hair-sprayed front-men, guitar virtuosity and overuse of emerging music technology (synthesizers and electronic drums, for example). Nirvana (and the alternative movement at large) countered with growls, screams and often mumbled vocals, simple guitar riffs and stripped down instrumental production.

I was a big GnR fan... then Nirvana blew my paradigm (and I wasn't alone).
So which do I prefer? Nirvana most days, but I'm confident Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Sound Garden needed bands like GnR, Poison, Crue and Warrant so they could have something to stand against. The "yin to their yang" if you will ;-)

but that's just me.

Nirvana...the changed the face of music during the 90s. Guns n Roses has some good songs...but nothing like Smells Like Teen Spirit. (or Lithium for that matter).

Guns 'n' Roses. Epic music. Nirvana were fine, but they led a generation of 'poor me isn't my life crap' wannabe copycats who started the death of modern music as everyone forgot to write about the important stuff and felt like their angst need airing more than love, war and peace. Nirvana could pull it off. Most others couldn't.

Definitely Nirvana--they led the charge of the flannel clad grunge rockers in the 90s--and changed the landscape of music at that time. All GNR did was play some good music, get drunk or high, and refuse to play on stage (Axl). They were just typical rockers. Nirvana were pioneers.
