At 12, a girls body is going through many changes and while she may appear overwieght, it is simply her body dealing with puberty and all that. It depends on her bone structure to know how much she should weigh, but I would guess she should be between 120 and 150 lbs.
If she is really fat, then sure, she has to learn better eating habits and spend more time being active instead of watching movies and sitting at the computer. You could take her to the doctor and he could help her to get her on a proper program of some sort, but she has to want to do it too.
If you talk to her about her weight, then be really careful that you emphasize that it is her health that you are concerned about and reinforce that you love her no matter what. Kids can be so easily influenced and your good intentions could backfire and you could end up with a kid who purges or becomes anorexic. Good luck and take care!

You don't say how much she weighs so it's hard to say if she is overweight. My 12 year-old grand-daughter weighs in at 90 lbs but is shorter than 5'5" and we are making her take off a few. Just cut out eating after 8 p.m. and no seconds at dinner. But at your daughters height it wouldn't be unheard of for her to weigh about 110 or so. I've always been told it goes more on height than age....also consider bone structure. Hope this helped.

Remember, your daughter is quite tall for her age, so she may well weigh more than other girls her age.

She should weight between 90lb and 130lb to be considered within the healthy weight range. However, even up to 150lb is still considered within the healthy BMI range, but is at risk of becoming overweight.

If she is over 130lb, but less than 150lb, she needs to watch what she eats and take plenty of exercise.

If she is over 150lb, you should consult with a doctor, who can recommend a weight loss plan. But she should not diet without consulting a doctor first.

HTH.

When I was 12 I wieghed 130 pounds and when I was 13 I wieghed 140. I know it sounds very heavy but I was never overwieght at all and and was exactly that hieght. As I grew taller I got more hips and better curves and am now very happy with my figure. So, because she is fairly tall, I wouldn't worry too much!

Depending on bone structure, anywhere between 114-150 lbs. is average. If you are concerned that her weight is unhealthy, check with her doctor to do a cholesterol test on her and check her blood pressure. If she is healthy and happy with her appearance, then let her be. Self esteem is more important and by far a better predictor of success than weight.

my daughter is 5'3 , 12 years old and weighs 89lbs. I will say this, I do not give my kids choises. when it comes to meal times...including lunches at school, the only time they get a proccessed snack is for a special occasion... it is soooo important that you teach your children good eating habits. also no sodas, have them drink alot of water. try to have a free food drawer in your fridge...which means they can have it without asking. put som free fruit in your drawer, fruit, cheese, cottage cheese, yogurt and even put some in the freezer, like frozen blueberries or bananas...and make sure they have a good breakfast in the morning like eggs, toast and a fruit. put carrot sticks in their lunchbox and boiled eggs.
you need to get them out of that sugar craze....its ok for the weekend but not the whole week.

good luck
and remember that their health is very important...also excersize and limit their tv time.

you might want to check with your doctor to see what the average weight is for 12 year olds. she's pretty tall; i'm almost 14 and i'm only 5' half an inch. i dunno if this helps, but when i was 12 i was around 90 pounds.. maybe a little bit more.
