Think of it this way.... if you were paying the bills would you want your employees doing anything other than work while at the office.

Yes. With the romance being in the mix, attention is taken away from productivity and focused more on the other "special" co-worker. I think that office romances hurt more than help. In the words of Michael Douglas in the movie "Fatal Attraction", "don't f**k where you work!!"

It is depending on the people involve and the level of maturity. If you two make it obvious that you are going out and doing the deed, then it will make the others come after you, especially if it is your boss.
Other then that, if you work in the same department, as long as you two work and actually act like coworkers then coworkers dating or coworkers in love, then you can actually get some work done. It is all tricky.
Just leave the love chats and other stuff like that at home and just do your job. You are professionals; so, act like it.

Office romances make life interesting, but oH BOY, they can either hurt or help productivity. What hurts most is that your professional relationship with that person has changed and now your motives change also, especially if that person is either junior or senior to you in the office hierarchy. Question is: is it worth it?

my romance wasn't even in my office, but with another person who worked in a different department, in the same building. don't do it! it's not the good, cute part that's the problem. in fact, we had fun keeping it a secret, and we were successful at keeping it a secret. it's the break up that will leave you disgusted...having to see the person everyday. even if you two decide to keep it a secret...you will be amazed at the little things i did after we broke up. looking out my window to see when he was coming and going from the building; arguing over our work email accounts and instant messengers; not being able to act natural when passing in the hallway; settling arguments in conference rooms. it's just not good. and it's easy for me to say, b/c i asked the same question as you, but still did it anyway. so follow your heart...but be mindful of the consequences! good luck

I think it probably crimps productivity a lot. People playing on the job doesn't allow full attention to the more mundane tasks.

sometimes better do to being afraid of getting caught and somtimes worse do to the fact the one thinks they can get away from stuff because the boss won't care

I think that if they keep their romances out of the workplace, and have self-control at their job than they should be fine.

its a motivation tool: if you are in love with someone in the office, it motivates you to come to work early and not to be absent.
however if it leads to low productivity then management should step in and impose necessary policies.
