Capezio is one of the best dance brands. They have a great sound and are really comfortable. You could buy them cheaper at www.discountdance.com.
Also, if you are only taking tap for a semester, then it may not be worth it to spend $40 on shoes. Cheaper brands that are just as good: Leo's dance, Bloch, Dancenow
If you haven't taken tap before, I suggest an Oxford (traditional). Usually people who are into musical theater use character taps with (2.5-3 inch) heels.

Capezio is a very good brand of tap shoes. So are Bloch, So Danca and Main Street. Capezio CG09's have had problems with the taps unscrewing and not going back, they are actually discontinued now I think. My friends and I have had Capezio CG55's and have had problems with the screws sheering off. We still rate these pretty high though among standard not-break-the-bank styles of taps. Bloch Ballast are comfy as all get out, run small, are not good for toe stands because of the heel design. If you're not planning to do a toe stand, these would work. If you are suppose to purchase high heels, So Danca's are the most comfortable of the high heel brands of tap shoes, they run small, so buy a little bigger than your usual size, Main Street tap shoes have adjustable taps that sound great, are fairly new to the market and I don't know any negatives yet. You asked, I told. I hope I didn't say too many bad things, looking over my response I guess I could have.

I don't agree that Capezio is good brand for ALL dance shoes. Ladies ballroom and Latin by Capezio are not any good. I know it's not the question you asked, but just in case some poor soul comes across your Q searching for ballroom shoes - no, don't ever buy Capezio ladie's ballroom. They are not properly balanced and they fall apart way too soon. They are poor knock-off from Supadance.
They may be good at making tap shoes, I wouldn't know about it.

I grew up in ballet and tap. I majored in theatre dance in college.
Capezio is the BEST company for ALL dance shoes.
When it comes to leotards and tights, it's a tie between Capezio and DANSKIN.

I like Capezios, but I prefer Blochs. I have a very narrow heel, and I find Blochs fit me better.

capezio is a great brand! however, it runs small, so if you have large/wide feet, go with bloch! bloch runs bigger! good luck!
