How many people are really find themselves motivated by the points in Yahoo answers? I don't really get it. Opinions? Does this have anything to do with Psychology?

I believe that there is something to do with psychology. As human being, we will be always proud if we feel that we win something and sad if we loose something. Yahoo Answers plays with your psyche in order to motivate you to participate and Yahoo Answers is a good strategy to bring traffic to Yahoo.

I don't care if I loose or win points because I know that these points don't mean anything really, it's just a psychology thing.

It seems to me that the point system is an indicator of the value that someone brings to the site. The points don't motivate me in and of themselves. It's being able to provide beneficial answers to others that is satisfying. Points come along with the recognition of your valuable contribution.

If you want to get psychological about it, points are for positivitye/constructive viewpoints or the value you create. Subtraction of points is an indicator of negativity or answers that lack insight or compassion. I guess if I'm told I did something good (+points) I'll feel good. And if I'm told I wasn't helpful (-points) that would influence my behavior in some way.

Probably see a lot of that natured questions here. Doesn't really motivate me. You get nothing for points. I asked a question why didn't they have a periodic winner or for certain levels give you a t-shirt key chain ... or let you buy with points and people were rude so I just picked the answer that was the nicest and went on. No more questions for me. :-)

It's give and take and not just take a lot of points. If you got questions you wanted to ask and you don't know, someone will help you. You may lose 5 points but sometimes it's worth it if you don't know the answer. Nothing to do with Psychology whatsoever.

Each time I lose a point I cut my arms up bad. I need to feel important, loved and wanted. I have profiles on MySpace, Yahoo Messenger, MSN Messenger, and my own website on Tripod. I love my points, I sit and answer these questions all day, just for maximum points. I beg people to rate my answer as the best answer just for the extra 10 points. I pay people to do it.

I don't get it either... my motivation is just asking what I want and answering what I want. I could care less about the points.

I live my life around the points system. I value them like they were my own child. I cherish each and every point because they could be gone in a minute. Church.

I don't answer questions just to get points, but I do wonder what happens when you get to the next level, which keeps me answering.
