Calling 911 would be a start. For a fire, ask the parents about their fire plan if they have any. Otherwise get familiar with all of the exists and escape routes and plan on getting everyone out of the house immediately. Illness, depending on how severe, you only would need to call the parents and inform them of what is going on. If it's something really bad that would require immediate attention than 911 would be the way to go.

Well, I've been "babysitting" for a long time (I'm 30). Usually it's more about getting the kids to remember that, "Mom is the boss, and she asked me to be the boss, so, yes, I AM the boss of you... your mom said so!"

I have one family that I watch on a pretty regular basis, a precocious 8-yr-old boy, a 4-yr-old boy and a 6-month-old girl. The 8-yr-old will try to argue me into something, and it's gotten to where I just say, "M--, what did I just say?..." *1 eyebrow raised*... Usually, he'll respond with a thoughtful look and, "... oh..." If he says, "I don't remember.." I remind him, then I get the, "...oh.." It works really well!

Their dad says that he's totally confident with me there- he knows that the oldest won't get away with stuff... ;)

one day i was taking care of 2 boys, and the 4 yr old boy got a stomach ache. when he got to the bathroom he pooped all over the place, and then stopped up the toilet w/ a lot of toilet paper. i finally got the toilet unstopped and cleaned up all the mess with some old towels, and called his mom to tell her he was sick. i cleaned him up, gave him some medicine, and put him in bed. it's all about being cool calm and collected.

the parents of the kids are always harder to deal with than the child. you teach the child to eat with thier own hands and the parents say "why did you let them do that, now they are filthy." or you teach them to ask for what they want instead of pointing and the parents go right in behind you and destroy your efforts by just getting them what they point at. stupid parents..How are they supped to learn if you do everything for them?
