Nope, you can start as a line cook, then maybe prep, so on.

It all depends on the establishment. Generally, it is a good idea to have some knowledge in cooking before trying to become one, but some places will hire you as a prep cook, where you pretty much chop up onions, peel potatoes and make easy things to begin with, and then move up to the more difficult stuff later. If you want to learn fast, starting out as a prep cook in a catering establishment is a great start. As the menu is always changing, and you'll always have something new to learn! Good luck!

Most places will train you. If they're really big and busy they probably would prefer some experience, but smaller places probably won't. My first job was at a fast food place and I had never cooked at all. I eventually moved to the kitchen and learned about food prep. From their I went to a restaurant where I kept the salad bar stocked and then I moved into the kitchen there and they taught me what I needed to know.

You will need a hygiene certificate. You should have an awareness then of how a kitchen should run. It's not an easy job and you will need stamina, nerves of steel and an ability to watch learn and keep your head down in the heat of the kitchen. Don't take anything personally.. just learn.

In a smaller place, they usually like to train you to do it their way. Just go ahead and apply and see how they feel about it. Hopefully you're willing to learn.
