Emo-core is an offshoot of punk rock that directed its focus towards introspective, sad, romantic feelings as opposed to rebellion and politics. Think: the Smiths versus the Sex Pistols. Emo-core has been around since the early 90's. It used to be relatively down-tempo, but newer bands have incorporated garage-y pop-punk styles into their sound.

Early emo bands included Superchunk, Bratmobile, Braid, Far and Jimmy Eat World (they've been around forever, but managed to become popular relatively recently).

Current emo bands include All-American Rejects, Angels & Airwaves, Dashboard Confessional, Death Cab for Cutie (although they've been around a while, too!) and a slew of others.

Kids who want to be emo like to wear clingy vintage T-shirts, Converse Chuck Taylors, and skinny pants.

Although it is often mistaken as being short for "emotional," emo was originally the abbreviation for a type of music known as "emotive hardcore". Emo music performances were extremely dramatic, typicalling including lead singers falling to their knees and screaming or crying. Because traditional hardcore contained a lot less whining and a lot more beating people up, "emo" soon became a taunting nickname used by punkers to insult other, more sensitive members of the hardcore scene. The "emotive" part of emotive hardcore is that it attempts to authentically convey raw human emotion.

However, this musical movement died at least 100 years ago.
