Prune juice or pureed prunes. Glycerin supositories are another option.

dilute a little baby prune juice (or dilute a bit more if you use adult prune juice) with water. That will do the trick and is safe.
At 4 months you don't need to start feeding him and him pushing it out is likely learning to use his tongue and not a reflection that he doesn't like the cereal. Keep trying for a few days, then if he is refusing it, switch, and try it again in a month or so. Don't add new foods sooner than every 3 or 4 days or you won't be able to isolate out allergies.
Most babies DO NOT need to eat solid food until at least 6 months. Formula or breast milk is enough for up to a year.

You have to try foods several times for a baby to accept it sometimes. Giving up too soon leads to picky eaters later on. It cam take up to 10 attempts of trying a certain food before they will eat it. At four months my son's doctor told me to mix 2 oz prune juice with 2 oz warm water and within 12 hours he had a bowel movement. You can use glycerine suppositories...my son was almost 3 months early and the nurses at Children's hospital used these on him. They are totally safe and usually work within 20 min.

I personally think 4 month is to early for baby cereal, it is hard on their tummy, but all babies are different. My 2 month old is also on formula, Nestle Good Start (supposed to be easier to digest)and he also has a hard time pooping and I give him a bottle of water with a pinch full of brown sugar. If you do this you should see results within 24 hours.

How do you know he is constipated? Often children will go days without defecating. My oldest went 7 days at one stretch. Nothing wrong, just extremely efficient digestion.
So before you freak out or try to fix a problem, make sure there is one. If the child cries and can't go that is one thing, but if they just don't go that is totally different.
If they are constipated, any sugary water mixture works. The sugar inhibits the large intestine from removing water and will soften stool and cause a short mild version of diarhea.

Awfully early for that much solid food--Make sure you are giving him enough formula--that should be the main source of nutrition...solid are certainly not necessary--just something to mess with...I never gave my babies any solids until after 6 months--they DO NOT "need" solid food and it can be tough on the tummy and digestive tract as you have found out!!
(btw-you can't "run out" of breastmilk..its a supply and demand thing--you nurse, you have milk...don't nurse, and you don't make milk...)
Good luck!

you should start with some apple sauce. If that doesnt work give your baby some prune juice. If you think he/she is hurting from the constipation it is nice to put him/her in the bathtub and getly rub there belly with a warm wash cloth. My son used to suffer from constipation as well. I am not sure if you can at his age but magnesium pills are great for that too. A very small amount. But i would check with you doctor on that one first

I know for a fact that prunes do work.... almost too well if you catch my drift. My doctor recommends a teaspoon of Karo syrup in an 8 oz bottle. It may take a couple of bottles but it usually works in the first 8 hours.

My baby was constipated real bad at 5 months and I took him to the doctor and his pediatrician said not to give him any juice or Karo syrup because he was to young but to use 1/2 a Glycerin suppository. I had to ask at my local drug stores pharmacy because they keep them behind the counter but it worked real good on my son.
