You cannot connect to the internet without one. For broadband cable/ADSL internet you can't go past a Linksys EtherFast Cable/DSL Router with 4-Port Switch
Share Your High-Speed Internet Connection Throughout Your Home or Office. I use it and it has not let me down yet. The USB modems that Internet Service Providers give when you connect with them are not the best. They are very low end product with not a lot of options to keep you secure. Linksys has a great inbuilt firewall that when properly set up will keep you safe. I often look at my security logs and see the attempts by outsiders to gain access to my computer and they have all failed to get in.

If you're referring to DSL modems and broadband, they're critical. The ones from the phone company get the job done fine. There's no sense in trying to replace them with another brand as it may not work as well and you may have issues configuring it. Also, the telcos occasionally push firmware updates to your modem. If the update fails, the modem may stop working completely.

Most modems that are offered from ISP (Internet Providers) are good...but not the best...however most people will say just to stick with the one provided since if it messes up you can easily unplug it and take it to your local office and get a new one free of charge...where if you buy one and it messes up then your out however much money you paid...and most ISP rent modems for less than 3 bucks a month....

modems are for dial up; dsl has different hardware.
ask for "NAT router" not a hub. go to 'grc.com/security now' and listen to the wav file on routers (a coupleof them) to get an easy to follow explanation of all this and security for same.
