I can tell you that on my first day of a job I always felt like I had butterflies in my stomach, my hands shake, and I get a major headache........LOL
And I usually stayed pretty much to myself and concentrated on doing the best job I could.
A job is not a social gathering it is a place of business.

I usually act enthusiastic and friendly. I think its important to make a good first impression to your new coworkers, but not be too overbearing or chatty. You don't want to give away your whole life story on the first day. I think a lot of good office relationships are based on trust, so the first day is a good way to plant a seed that will enable you to gain the trust of your coworkers.
Also, don't totally kiss your new boss' butt on the first day ... you don't want to set yourself up as a brown noser. Tackle your first day assignments with a good attitude and make yourself available and willing to do what is necessary to get the job done.
You want to leave a first day impression that reaffirms your company's belief that they made the right decision and hired the right person. Sort of like instilling a sense of consumer confidence in your upper management.

I just started a new job yesterday, I felt nervous and overwhelmed. There are so many coworkers for me to get to know, and so many things for me to learn, I thought I did an alright job my first two days. (today being my second day). I will finish the week and see how it goes, if I don't think it is a good fit for me I may have to look elsewhere. I hate being the the new person at work!!!

I just had my first day at a new job a couple of weeks ago. I was nervous and excited all at the same time! I hadn't worked in 18 months, since my boy was born... so I was worried about him as well! All turned out OK though! I had a great first day, jumped right back into the swing of things, and am doing pretty darn good now! :-)

Scared, incompetent, and stupid. I have a new job coming up next Monday. I expect to feel all those things. But it gets better! I'm sure I'll act like I understand more than I really do!

Like a recluse... I want to get a feel for what kinds of people I work with and start to notice which ones I need to stay away from. Gossipers, Troublemakers, Tattle-Tales, Jealous people and nosy people.

It always is a little odd! You don't seem like you belong yet, but are excited at the same time!
