One of the most notable achievements of the Industrial Revolution was the steam engine. Think steamboats and railroads. These two modes of transportation made huge changes to people's lives. Steamboats and railroads made it possible to move large numbers of people over great distances in relatively short periods of time.

Look at the settlement of the American west, for example. Initially the trip from New York or Pennsylvania to Missouri was a long and treaturous journey. Later, using railroads and steamboats places like St. Joseph, Missouri were "Jumping Off" points, not destinations. The long cross-country treks trailed off significantly when the trans-continental railroad finally made it possible to relocate from one coast to the other quickly and with far less danger to life and limb.
