the question says, what number does a string with three knots at the bottom, four knots in the middle, and five knots at the top represent?

I assume, based on your assertion that the lesson is on place value, that the number is either 345 or 543, depending on whether the ones digit is supposed to be on the top or bottom. Although, I really fail to see how asking you to determine what a number is based on its quipu representation is more instructive than asking you to determine what a number is from its decimal representation (especially since up until now I had no idea what a quipu was).

the quipu was used by Incans, kind of like an abacus. The best I see it, you would start reading from the top, so that represents 543
