I have an interview scheduled later this week for a supervisor position in TN. Can anyone tell me what it's like to work in the call center? Duties, challenges, ups, downs, etc? How are the opportunities for advancement? Is 49K too much to ask for my salary?

Hey Potential Supervisor..

I have worked in a very large telecommunications company call center and heres my input:

I still work with the company and love it!
Working in a call center might involve managing union employees, which is some cases can be difficult. Each representative will probably have some type of sales objective that they will have to meet weekly or monthly. You'll need to be able to deal with a variety of personalities and probably have to make some tough decisions, like hiring, promoting and possibly firing someone.
The good part is that it can be very rewarding! If you or your team that you supervise does well, normally you will get compensated outside your salary. You asking 49K might be just a tad high, unless you have some quality creditials and are a proven performer. But it is better to ask HIGH and then come down, rather than to ask LOW and try to sneak up.

Sales is sales! Plenty of rejections, but if you know how to overcome that, find a need for the products a customer may want, you'll do just fine!

Normally, if you get a foot in the door, it should open up many opportunities within that company. I started as a sales rep, then a sales supervisor and since then have moved into our Information Technology department and create web-based training, inwhich the company has paid for my training. I love my job and my company has taken very good care of me.

All because..I believed in me and what many said was a tough job...working as a supervisor in a call center!

You Make the Call!! (snicker, snicker!)
Best of Luck!

I have worked in a Verizon call center here in Canada, for high-speed tech support. It is fast-paced, most people I spoke with were already angry because their internet wasn't working and having to troubleshoot over the phone with someone who doesn't know how to turn their computer on was a treat! Often people montior your calls (quality assurance), and tell you how well/crappy you did. Turnover rate is high, it stresses people out and they just quit. Not much freedom. Can you tell I loved it?! I lasted about two years. Supervisor position probably better though!

I applied for a job there. A regular rep makes $35K. I have no idea about the regular up's and down;s but I'd start out asking for $45 or so. Unless you have prior supervisor experience. Then shoot for $49 or so.

you are goging to ask for 49K for a position that normally starts out at $8.50-$9.00/hour? BWHAHAHAHAHAHA i know a few people that used to work at the one where you have your interview. they didnt have lives after they started, most of the peple that work there are of the alternative persuasin and it seemed like they were the ones that got the promotions..."they have to take care of their own". if you are seriously considering call center work, i would suggest sprint in the metro center complex in nashvegas.

Sounds like you're not cut out for sales. Try engineering. They get a salary for the bulk of their pay.
