Controll the general population by succumbing them into a false sense of self control with the notion that if they all vote a certain way , that is how it will be. But there is far too much corruption in government to maake this a real viable alternative. I love the Idea of it and wish it could really be a true Democracy , but you have to eradicate greed, lust for power, and corruption first. Good luck with that. In the mean time Democracy will just keep lulling countries one by one until they don't need us anymore.
Remember , ignorance is bliss, the less you know the easier it is to be happy.

It is supposed to provide a system of checks and balances so that one part of govt can't become too powerful and either take control of the other parts or do what it wants without the approval of other partys, i.e. the president can't do whatever he wants without the approval of Congress, and Congress' legislation (bills)can be vetoed by the president. Also, the people are supposed to be able to elect officials that they think will do the best job for them which "supposedly" keeps the officials from becoming too powerful. Sometimes this does not always work, i.e. Ted Kennedy, various Bushes and others with power, influences, and alot of money, but the principle is there to guide govt.
