having acted on camera for a low-budget film, i can answer that one. it is simply a screen acting rule: Don't Look At The Camera.

the characters on the film are meant to appear natural. therefore, if the actor looks directly at the camera, he/she is essentially addressing that there is a world beyond the one on the film. which, in the actor's world, is simply not true.
if an actor looked directly into the camera, this would distract the audience from the focus and flow of the events on the screen. (think brad pitt or reese witherspoon looking directly at you). suddenly, you're involved, and this isn't supposed to be.

I imagine it would take a lot of effort for the actors and actresses not to look at the camera. I'm sure the producers tell them to look anywhere except at the cameras.

i became an extra in a television production. a splash diverse to a action picture yet we've been informed to no longer make single sound for the time of taking pictures because of the fact the sound song screws up or somthing because of the fact they upload each and all of the chitter chatter and different historical past noise after for the time of modifying. and then the director gets so annoyed and frightening in case you probably did make a valid. haha different than that we've been usually skipped over for many of it and the only interplay we had became from human beings strictly telling us the place to be and what to do and if its no longer completed actual or takes too long they get actual mean and frightening hahaha. so whilst they say quiet on set, they actually mean close the f**ok up actual now in the different case. lol

They're stupposed to act as though it's not there. It's supposed to be like it's real, when real things happen like that people don't look into a camera.

because the actors are talking to each other... they keep the eyeline the same. the actors are not talking to the audience... that's why they don't look in the camera.

It doesn't seem natural. They are probably talking to another character, not you, the audience. It depends on what movie..
