When you "rip" the songs from the CD, make sure to set it to save the new files as .mp3 format. Even Win Media can do this, but there are other programs you can use.
P.S. In Win Media, go to tools, click the options, and under copy, there is a drop-down menu which you can switch from WMA to .mp3 format for saved files.

if the cds are in wma format, then you cant do anything about it without a lot of work. You would have to import them onto your hardrive and then burn all of the songs onto new cds that hold all music. You can then import them into iTunes and onto your ipod. It takes a lot of time( I speak from experience).

If you right-click them, there'll be a button that says convert to AAC. So, you click that, and wait. Then, the songs should be able to rip to your iPod.

Get a good program and convert the files, I us a program supplied by creative, works fine for me.
