I have tried (and failed) several times now using various methods, and seriously regret starting in the first place. I think the answer would be to issue special cards to all current smokers, and only sell cigarettes to those that posses the cards. That would stop new people starting smoking, and over time the number of smokers would diminish until there were none left. The problem with this is that its often human nature to really want something if you're told you can't have it. Hence any smoking ban might make certain people start smoking, just because they're not supposed to.

I gave up in 1993 whan I was 48 years old. I had smoked since the age of 9 and was a minimum of a 30 a day smoker - 60 a day in times of stress. I thought it was going to be hard and bought a month's supply of nicotine patches. It was SO EASY I only used the patches for 2 days. But you have to want to give up - it's no good doing it because others tell you to. Prepare for it - get a tray of crudites - carrot batons, celery etc for the oral satisfaction - do something with your hands - take up knitting perhaps? I tend not to like bans and am not really sure that the health benefits promised from cessation of smoking will follow.

I found it easyish. I moved from 10-20 a day to nothing, with about a week of discomfort, and didn't smoke for about 8 months, when I realised that I didn't care about the health risks, and I enjoy it, and the only reason I'd quit was peer pressure, so I've started again, and I love it. There is no need for the state to get involved in something as petty as smoking, so I would say no to any kind of bad. I a pub or restarant wants to stop people smoking, then that is thier decision, not the governments.

I gave up smoking 2 weeks ago, and its very difficult. My wife smokes, and giving up is impossible when she's around, but she's on a month's holiday so I've taken the opportunity.

I don't think the government should be involved in peoples private lives. We need less government, and more freedom, not the other way around. If people running businesses don't want smokers, that's fine. Let supply and demand decide. Non-smokers can choose non-smoking places, and smokers can chose smoking places. Freedom is what life is about.

It's agonizing to try to quit smoking, but there is always outside and home. I think the ban should have come sooner except in bars.
Even many non-smokers will ask for a cigarette when they have a drink. Some of the local bars are closing because the people that like their smokes and drinks are doing it at home.

If you want to give up smoking go to California for six weeks thats how I gave up. Guess what you also get a great tan and get to chill by the beach. Or go to wine country and get pissed happy days.

P.S. I don't think there should be a ban because the problem with cali is that there bars feel like there is something missing in them it feels like there is no atmosphere in the bars and that is because people don't have the right to smoke whilest they are drinking. I think its wrong it should be one of the only places to smoke and that is when you are having a drink.

I am off fags exactly one week today! It is very hard but not as hard as trying to breathe. Not as hard as seeing a flight of stairs posing the the same problem for u as Everest did for the guy who climbed it first. Not as hard as being too knackered to have REAL fun cos you just dont have the stamina. And the longer you smoke, the worse it gets. Stop now b4 it stops u! And if u know of any easy ways to do it, Let me know! But Im so thrilled with my week!
The smoking ban is a great help to people giving up fags. They're not in your face all the time so don't pose too much temptation. They should be banned everywhere except inside peoples own homes! Harsh? I have to be . I'm dealing with death here. They kill.

I'm not a smoker, but I do think there should be a ban on smoking in all public places. If someone wants to kill themeselves by smoking, thats fine. Just dont harm the more inteligent people of the world with your second-hand smoke.

Not really. I gave up smoking in 1970 and all I had to do was chew gum for about a month or so.The hardest part was the first 2-3 days. After that it got easier and easier.
